Churchill was 1st Lord of the Admiralty from October 1911 to May 1915. As Sir Hedworth Lambton, the recipient of Churchill's letter had risen to fame for leading the naval brigade to the siege of Ladysmith in 1899; this was the occasion of his meeting Valerie Lady Meux, who at her death in 1910 left him her considerable fortune on the sole condition that he change his name to Meux. As commander-in-chief, Porstmouth, at the outbreak of the Great War, Meux was responsible for defending the lines of communication with the BEF in France.
