The letter opens with anxious enquiries about Pamela's ill-health (which had kept her away from the ceremony at the Guildhall to unveil the Oscar Nemon statue of Churchill) and apologies for not have written: 'I have wanted to write to you every single day & am ashamed at myself'. The Guildhall ceremony was 'the last public engagement I have', though the statue was 'worth the worry these things take me now. I am getting older now the trappings of power & responsibility have fallen away'. Debilitated by old age and the stroke he had suffered in June 1953, Churchill had resigned office on 5 April 1955.
