Best known as the father of modern Russian children’s literature, Chukovsky was also a gifted critic and translator. He spent many years on his study of the life and work of the Russian poet N. A. Nekrasov (1821-1878) that Lenin’s widow Nadezhda Krupskaya denounced in Pravda . She objected to Chukovsky’s poking into the revered writer’s private life. Avdotya Yakovsevna Paneva (1819-1893), the subject of this study, was both the wife of Nekrasov’s friend and Nekrasov’s long time mistress. M. S. Shaginyan (1888-1982) was a Soviet woman writer, perhaps best known for her pulp novel about Yankees in Petrograd Mess-Mend (1922) under the psudonym “Jim Dollar.
