.64 caliber, 33" octagonal-to-round, cannon-type barrel with Birmingham proofs. Brass trigger guard, buttplate, sideplate and brass ferrules. Raised relief-carved teardrop behind the tang. Behind tang is silver bust inlay of an Indian chief. Front sight with "X"-shaped inlaid silver. A fine Hudson Bay made English sporting-type rifles created for the fur trade. (Illustrated in Painter, 2000: 197, fig. 275.) Condition: Barrel has a deep dark rich brown look. Heavily pitted in the drum area with fine pitting running out to the muzzle. Lockplate is heavily pitted and has a deep brown look. Brass ferrules show use with one slightly bent and rear ferrule severed at the edge. Buttplate, trigger guards and ferrules have been lightly cleaned and have begun to patinate. Stock has two small slivers of wood missing on front left side of barrel. Right side of stock has 6" crack from muzzle inward. Stock has minimal dings, mars and scratches. Entire rifle appears to have been museum treated and dipped in preservative wax. A light coating of shellac has been applied to the wood. Ramrod is not original.
