Chenier L., "Revolutions de lEmpire Ottoman et observations sur ses progress, sur ses revers et sur letat present de cet Empire", Paris, chez lauteur, 1789. First and only edition of one of the rarest account for the Levant. In 8vo, 21x13cm, complete 388p., contemporary full leather, slightly damaged at head and corners of spine, text clean, overall very good. This privately published account (chez lauteur) for the Ottoman Levant, is the work of Luis de Chenier, a French merchant who lived in Constantinople from 1742 to 1767 and later became consul. He married a Greek Cypriot lady who gave birth to Andre de Chenier (the greatest French poet of 18th century), in 1762 at Constantinople. Louis returned finally in Paris in 1782, wrote this lengthy account and published it in 1789. Few months after, he escaped to England to avoid the fate of many nobles after the revolution and obviously the very little print run of this book has been dispersed. A very detailed and trustful description of the Ottoman Levant from someone who lived there for 25 years. Atabey 231, not in Blackmer. Extremely rare.
