The text consists of exerpts from ancient Daoist texts Unsigned with five seals of the artist Cheng Sui belonged to a prominent scholar-official family in Anhui province. He was known as a connoisseur and collector of bronzes, jades, painting and calligraphy, as well as an accomplished seal carver. He studies painting in Beijing with Huang Daozhou (1585-1646). During his mature years, which he spent in Nanjing and Yangzhou, Cheng Sui was influenced by the painting styles of Xu Ben (14th century), Wang Meng (1308-1385), his friend Kuncan (1612-circa 1674) and Cheng Zhengkui (1604-1676). During his later years, although closely associated with Wang Shimin (1592-1680), Cheng Sui developed a range of eclectic styles.
