CHATEAU LEOVILLE-POYFERRE Although all three Châteaux bearing the Leoville moniker are classified as second growths, Poyferre has always seemed to garner the bronze medal for its traditional if somewhat reticent St. Julien expression. Poyferre, however broke out of its shell with a stupendous effort in the 1990 vintage and has continued its hot streak since. The tannic purple streak may best be explained by the increased percentage of Petit Verdot, a varietal that is gaining face with other quality conscious chateaux vinifying age worthy wines. Leoville-Poyferre is a powerfully impressive backwards wine that marries the distinctive qualities of traditional Bordeaux with the quality controls of modern winemaking.
