CHARLES-NICOLAS COCHIN PORTRAIT OF THE EMPRESS CATHERINE II IN PROFILE, BLACK CHALK, WHITE CHALK, STUMPING, CIRCULAR
During his career, nicolas-cochin-the-elder" title="Charles-Nicolas Cochin the elder">Charles-Nicolas Cochin worked several times directly for the empress Catherine II of Russia. No doubt he had the opportunity to portray her at the time of one of these commissions. Two drawings by Cochin reflect this collaboration: Victories won over the Ottoman Empire, signed and dated 1776 (Sotheby’s, London, 9 April 1970, lot 147; see C. Michel, nicolas-cochin-the-elder" title="Charles-Nicolas Cochin the elder">Charles-Nicolas Cochin et l’art des Lumières, Paris, 1993, p. 168), and an Allegory of Catherine II codifying Russian law, signed, dated 1777 and engraved by Choffard (location unknown; for the engraving, see La France et la Russie au siècle des Lumières, exhib. cat., Paris, Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais, 1986-1987, no. 93, ill.).
