CHARLES-JOSEPH NATOIRE, A TRIUMPHAL ENTRANCE OF AN HORSEMAN CROWNED BY A PUTTO, BLACK AND WHITE CHALK, BROWN WASH ON BLUE PAPER
This unpublished drawing does not seem to be preparatory to a painting, but the position of the horse, the presence of dogs in the foreground, and the fluted columns of the building in the background reminds one of the atmosphere of the main painting of the History of Don Quixote, painted by Natoire around 1734-1735 and now at the Compiègne (inv. 38.764; see S. Caviglia-Brunel, Charles-Joseph Natoire (1700-1777), Paris, 2012, no. P.60, ill.).
