albumen photograph 16 x 11", mounted on heavy black 20 x 16" greenish-black board, taken in Washington, D.C., ca 1870s. A rare large-format albumen photograph of a Prairie Indian by Charles Milton Bell (1848-1893). Bell is best known for his photographs of Native Americans, which he began making for Ferdinand V. Hayden of the United States Geological Survey of the Territories in 1873. Many of Bell's photographs are misattributed to William Henry Jackson because Jackson was listed as the official photographer of the Hayden Survey. Bell's original negatives of Native American images are now in the Bureau of American Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution. This image is published in Bush and Mitchell (1994:60). Condition: Mount corners rubbed, else EXC.
