Beschreibung:

CHARAVAY, Marie-Etienne (1848-1899). Revue des documents historiques. Paris: 1873-1881. 8 volumes in four, 8 o (240 x 150mm). Plates (many folding). Illustrations. Contemporary paisley-patterned cloth, yapp fore-edges, morocco-lettering piece to spine. Provenance : Alidor Delzant (1848-1905, binding) This luxuriously produced series, printed on heavy handmade paper, prints and in most cases reproduces, documents and autograph letters from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century, with exhaustive biographical and historical commentaries by (Marie-)Itienne Charavay, the most eminent French dealer and 'expert' in autographs, whose business continues to the present day. Many of the items listed obviously belonged to his own firm, no owner being mentioned, others to great private collectors such as Fillon and Boret, again a few others were items in his forthcoming auctions, here described in much greater detail than was possible in the sale catalogues. The reproductions of autographs are of considerable value, as many are found nowhere else. This delightfully bound set comes from the collection of Alidor Delzant, the littérateur, traveller and book and autograph collector (cf. DBF ). (4)
