Dacier is 'THE TURNING POINT IN THE DECIPHERMENT OF THE HEIROGLYPHS' (Blackmer), and announces Champollion's assignment of phonetic values to 12 heiroglyphs and his tentative association of 40 heiroglyphic signs with the phonetic sounds of 17 Greek letters. From these initial researches, Champollion was able to progress to a more comprehensive decipherment, thus making the texts of ancient Egypt accessible to his contemporaries and founding modern Egyptology. Lettres à M. le duc de Blacas d'Aulps was issued in two parts between 1824 and 1826 (although De Ricci notes that the third letter was never published), and includes J.-J. Champollion-Figeac's 'Notice chronologique des dynasties égyptiennes de Manéthon'. This copy contains the full complement of 17 plates, the final plate coloured by hand; both of these works by Champollion are rare at auction. Champollion-Figeac's Analyse d'un mémoire and Dumont's Necrologie are both offprints from the Bulletin universel des sciences , section VII, and are rarely found in this format.
