CHAMBERS, Ephraim (d.1740). Cyclopaedia: or, an Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences London: for James Knapton, John Darby [etc.], 1738. 2 volumes, 2 (393 x 240mm). Titles in red and black. Folding engraved frontispiece, 19 engraved plates (numbered I-XIV, XIV[*], XV-XVIII, 5 folding). Frontispiece and two plates creased, plate II browned, small paper flaw in lower blank margin of plate XI, some old dampstaining to lower outer corners of second half of vol.II.) Contemporary 19th-century calf, covers panelled in black, the upper cover with 'WCC' monogram surmounted by an armorial crest in gilt, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, lettered in gilt in the second and fourth, the others with large lozenge tool in black (small splits to joints, some old staining and discolouration). Provenance : W.C.Carpenter (binding). FIRST EDITION OF THE SECOND ENGLISH ENCYCLOPAEDIA. John Harris published the first English encylopaedia in 1704 ( Lexicon Technicum, or an universal dictionary ) see lot 39. Chambers, whilst employed by the cartographer and globe-maker Senex, "was seized by the idea that Harris's Lexicon needed bringing up to date and that he was the man to do this 'work so seemingly disproportionate to any single person's experience'. A good French scholar, he adapted Morri and Bayle... to the common-sense climate of the English Enlightenment. Moreover, he introduced a novel device that has proved indispensible to every subsequent lexicographer and encyclopaedist, namely, cross-references.. . Thanks to his editiorial accomplishments the Cyclopedia was revised, translated, and imitated throughout the eighteenth century.': PMM 171(b). (2)
