The common portrait of Hiram Berdan (1824-1893) by M.F. King, Portland as Colonel of the elite 1st United States Sharpshooters. The albumen is not cut down but appears to have originally been made as a smaller format photograph on CDV cardstock. After raising the famous riflemen Berdan was only occasionally with the regiment in the field, although he was present at Gettysburg and assumed command of Hobart Ward's brigade when the former was wounded. Berdan was discharged in January 1864. Both of his brevet promotions were awarded sometime later in the large March 1865 dispensation. The carte bears an unknown ink inscription on verso that reads, Your Friend G. (or J.) C.R./Dec 25th 1862. The two Army of the Potomac noteworthies are Abner Doubleday as Captain by Anthony, and Daniel Sickles of Gettysburg fame. Provenance: The Tom MacDonald Maine Civil War CDV Collection Condition: All three G+ with edge wear; Sickles with three pin holes at bottom, Doubleday stained and trimmed slight at button.
