with printed caption on mount, Capt. Jack, the Modoc Chief, and imprint verso, Barker & Gatch, Portrait and Landscape Photographers, 67 Main Street, Ottawa, Kansas. This image was originally taken by photographer, Jeremiah Gurney in 1870 or 71(see Lot 425, this sale) when delegations of Plains tribes visited Washington, and later new York, where they posed in Gurney's studio. Although the man portrayed may have been called Captain Jack, he is not the famous Modoc with the same name. Barker likely produced this image to capitalize on the public interest of the "real" Modoc conflict. Condition: Brown stain upper right, otherwise very good; card has light horizontal crease.
