Two albums, 8.75 x 6.25 in. and 4.75 x 6.25 in., containing 99 CDVs and 5 tintypes, of which approx. 43 cartes bear imprints for San Francisco photographers and studios including William Shew, D.H. Woods, Hamilton & Tidball, G.D. Morse, E. Douarts, Oscar Foss, W. Dyer, J.G.H. Meyer, and New York Gallery. Other American imprints include those for J.A. Clayton, San Jose, CA; N. Portraits feature a number of interesting subjects including Civil War Union Army surgeon Lt. Col. DeWitt Clinton Peters signed and inscribed to "Capt. Winston USA" on verso; DeWitt Clinton Peters Jr., as five-year-old boy wearing a stylized military uniform (posed next to another young relative); German-born San Francisco pioneer and charter member of the San Francisco Stock and Exchange Board, Henry Schmiedell; San Francisco Forty-niner, whisky manufacturer, and philanthropist Jellis Clute Wilmerding; California millionaire banker and investor Joseph G. Eastland; American opera singer and daughter of inventor George Kellogg, Clara Louise Kellogg; and several members of the prominent Warrin family that had a presence in England and the United States. All tintypes appear to feature the same man, dressed in fraternal uniform in two of the portraits and regular dress attire in the others, bearing a close resemblance to a CDV portrait identified by verso inscription as John Warrin, Jr. California Military Registers list a 2nd lieutenant, "J.W. Warrin," who served in Co. "E" of the 1st Infantry Battalion (Franklin Light Infantry), 2nd Brigade. Condition: CDVs with varying degrees of toning, surface soil, discoloration, clipping and loss to corners, and wear to edges and corners. Albums with heavy wear including complete and partial loss to binding, wear and soiling to pages.
