The scarce second edition (first published in 1632) of Cavalieri's first book, a treatise on conic sections, tracing their origin amongst the Greeks, and their application to problems of optics and acoustics. He gave an explanation for how the system of mirrors designed by Archimedes may have succeeded in setting fire to ships in the defense of Syracuse in 214 B.C.E.Cavalieri was a Milanese cleric of the Jesuit order, who studied in Pisa and held the chair of mathematics at the University of Bologna.
