CATHERINE II (1729-1796), Empress of Russia . Autograph letter signed (as Princess Sophia Frederica Augusta of Anhalt-Zerbst) to Monsieur de Plesse, Grand Marshal at the court of the Bishop of Lübeck, Dornburg, 15 July 1742, in French, on mourning paper, 1½ pages, 4to , integral address leaf, remains of black wax seal (annotated in a later hand in red ink at top of 1st page, slightly worn at edges).

Autograph letter signed (as Princess Sophia Frederica Augusta of Anhalt-Zerbst) to Monsieur de Plesse, Grand Marshal at the court of the Bishop of Lübeck, Dornburg, 15 July 1742, in French, on mourning paper, 1½ pages, 4to , integral address leaf, remains of black wax seal (annotated in a later hand in red ink at top of 1st page, slightly worn at edges). Written at the age of thirteen, in a round childish hand, thanking her correspondent for the gift of a small dog: 'Je vous remercie fort du joli petit chien que vous avés eu la bonté de m'envoïer, il m'a fait un grand plaisir, je suis faché, Monsieur, que vous vous en soïez privée, vôtre intention ne m'en a que plus obligée, il trouve une aprobation [ sic ] si générale que ma Mere a pensé me le voler, mais ma Tante à décidé en ma faveur'. A postscript adds her mother's and aunt's greetings and refers to an enclosure for her uncle whose portrait she has asked for. The court of Anhalt-Zerbst was in mourning for Catherine's infant brother William. It was at Eutin, the residence of her uncle, the prince-bishop of Lübeck, Adolf Frederick August of Eutin, that Catherine first met her future husband, then Duke of Holstein-Gottorp and, for a short period in 1762, Peter III of Russia. They were married in 1745.
