An acknowledgement of Morvilliers's letter, continuing in her own hand about her intention to go to Blois and hopes of peace not for her own pleasure but for the kingdom and the preservation of the king [Henry III]. 'Je croy que me feyre aler iusques a bloys mes iene playn pas mes pas mesque ie puise feyre quelque bon service et ie ne panse poynt que on san puise fayre de meleur gue une bonne pays ie vous prie ce en [oiyez?] parler aseurer bien que ce ne[s]t pas mon plasir particulier qui me mayne mes le repos de cet Royaume que ie desire plus que ma vie car ce[s]t la conservation de cele du Roy.' Written during the turbulent period of civil war which followed the massacre of St Bartholomew. During a four month absence from Paris Catherine received the unwelcome news of the escape of the Duke of Alençon, implacably hostile to his brother the king, in mid-September. He rapidly issued a manifesto at Dreux calling for the States General to meet and for a general religious pacification, while a large Protestant force was reported to be heading for the frontier near the Rhine. As proposed in the present letter, Catherine hastened to Blois to meet d'Alençon on 29-30 September. Jean de Morvilliers (d.1577), an able negotiator who is mentioned in Montaigne's essays, was a member of the Privy Councils of Charles IX and of Henry III who was crowned in 1574. Unpublished (not in La Ferrière's edition of the Correspondance ).
