Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece, edges stained red (some light wear to sides). FIRST EDITION. In this treatise, Cassini de Thury disproves his father, Jacques Cassini's, view that the earth is elongated at the poles, instead favoring the Newtonian theory that the earth was flattened at the poles. This treatise was published as a volume in the Suite des Mémoires de l'Académie Royale des Sciences for the year 1740. Norman 413.
