Casey Stengel's 1959 "Roy Campanella Night" Presentation Trophy The Los Angeles Dodgers held "Roy Campanella Night" on May 7, 1959 to honor the great Brooklyn Dodger catcher who was permanently disabled in an automobile accident in January 1958, only months before the team began play on the west coast. The game, a benefit for Campy, was held at the Coliseum, fittingly performed by the hosting Dodgers and their longstanding rival New York Yankees. Campanella, a three-time MVP and among the most beloved "Boys of Summer," received an outpouring of support. The crescendo of the emotional affair occurred as Campy was assisted onto the field in a wheelchair pushed by Pee Wee Reese. The emotional crowd of 93,103 showered their hero with cheers of affection. In commemoration, Casey Stengel received this trophy. An engraved silver bowl manufactured by the F.B. Rogers Silver Co. sits atop a wood base along side a silver ball engraved with Campanella's signature. A plaque engraved with Casey's name and event details is affixed to the base. Excellent condition. LOA from the Stengel family.
