CARROLL, LEWIS [DODGSON, CHARLES LUTWIDGE] Alice's Adventures in Wonderland [And:] Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There . London: MacMillan, 1866 & 1872. The first published edition of Alice (ie. second edition overall); first edition, first issue of Through the Looking Glass. Finely bound in full red morocco by Morrell, the covers panelled in gilt, the spines tooled and lettered in gilt, gilt turn-ins, blue watered silk doublures and endpapers, all edges gilt, the original cloth covers and spines bound in at rear. 7 1/2 x 5 inches (19.5 x 13 cm); Alice [12], 192 pp., with the correct issue points of the contents leaf with inverted "s" in last line, p. 30 incorrectly numbered; Looking Glass 224 pp, leaf of ads, with the 3 pp. "To all child-readers of Alice's Adventures Wonderland" dated December 1871 tipped to endpaper. Both works illustrated by John Tenniel, these copies both finely hand-colored. Very light shelfwear with joints just starting, some very light wear and expert repair to margins of a few leaves, occasional offset from coloring. The first edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was recalled by Dodgson after he was unsatisfied with the printing of the illustrations, thus this issue is the earliest obtainable. This copy is enhanced by the fine hand-coloring of Tenniel's woodcut illustrations. C
