CARLYLE, Thomas (1795-1881). The Life of John Sterling . London: Robson, Levey, and Franklyn for Chapman and Hall, 1852. 8° (196 x 120mm). Half-title. Advertisement leaf bound in at the beginning. (A few leaves lightly spotted.) 20th-century crushed tan morocco gilt by The Doves Bindery dated 1906, the covers with borders of a row of dots within a rule, the falt spines gilt in 6 compartments, titled in one and dated at the foot, the other compartments decorated with central rose tools surrounded by leaves, gilt-ruled turn-ins with foliate cornerpieces, gilt edges, the endleaves and binder's blanks gauffered (extremities lightly rubbed, front free endpaper skilfully repaired at the margins and guarded in). Provenance : 'To Dr. Evory Kennedy , with many grateful regards: , T. Carlyle , Chelsea, 5 feb r 1852 -' (inscription on front free endpaper); Sir Hugh Walpole (1884-1941, sale, Christie's, 29 July 1946, lot 49, to); Sawyer. Second edition. AN INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY FROM SIR HUGH WALPOLE'S LIBRARY, IN A DOVES BINDING. Dr Evory Kennedy (?1807-1886) was Master of Dublin lying-in hospital in the early 1850s, and had been in contact with Carlyle during the course of the latter's visits to Ireland in the late 1840s (cf. Ryals and Fielding, editors Collected Letters XXVI, pp.101, 103, 147 etc.)
