Carlton Football Club 1908, Premiership MEDALLION AWARDED TO WILLIAM J. 'BILLY' PAYNE, 15 carat gold, pierced and fretted, obverse to a design of a scroll engraved C.F.C Premiers surrounded by a football over crossed premiership pennants, suspension ring, reverse engraved Presd. by A. McCracken Esq. President,1908, W.Payne; sold with the QUEEN"S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL AWARDED TO PAYNE for his service with the Victorian Mounted Rifles in South Africa during the Boer War, the medal has three clasps, Transvaal, Orange Free State, Cape Colony, and its original ribbon, the rim is engraved 1056 Pte. W.J. Payne. Victorian M.R. Billy Payne's football career, 1904-1912, with Carlton , conincided almost exactly with the Club's 'Golden Age'. For the second time in the history of the club the premiership was won three times in succession, 1906, 1907 and 1908. The first occasion was in 1873, 1874 and 1875. Payne was a champion half-back who was a fine mark, an excellent kick and possessed great dash. In Hugh Buggy and Harry Bell's The Carlton Story 1958, Payne is described as a 'superb defender' in the 1906 premiership team and was best afield. In 1908, Jubilee year of the national game and Carlton's third premiership Payne was named the most consistent defender. Payne also played in the losing Grand Finals of 1909 and 1910. In 1885 the government had approved the raising of a force of 1000 men, to be known as the Victorian Mounted Rifles, which were forerunners of the Light Horse. See illustration
