(Lacking the large folding map of the southern hemisphere at the start of vol.I, 17 plates with imprint shaved or lacking, two plates with margins shaved with slight loss to decorative engeaved borders, small tear to one folding map, vol.II Cc3 with short tear to inner blank margin.) Two works in 5 volumes, 4° (27.7 x 23cm). Uniformly bound in half speckled calf, the flat spines gilt in six compartments, with red and green morocco lettering-pieces in two (small splits to the joints of three volumes, very light scuffing to extremities). Provenance : Sir Richard Bedingfeld (1720-1795, Oxburgh Hall, King's Lynn, Norfolk, ink stamp on titles); Sir Henry Bedingfeld (armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITIONS OF COOK'S FIRST TWO VOYAGES. "The famous accounts of Captain Cook's three voyages form the basis for any collection of Pacific books. In three great voyages Cook did more to clarify the geographical knowledge of the southern hemisphere than all his predecessors had done together.
