Lot of 2 photographs of Jack Crawford (1847-1917), also known as the "Poet Scout," a soldier, Indian scout, author, and performer in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Featuring 4 x 5.75 in. photograph on 5 x 7 in. mount showing Crawford posed together with six other men identified on verso as "C.E. Vandever / Mr. Louis / Indian Chiefs - Arizona." This photograph may have been taken ca 1889, when Crawford was working as a special agent and traveled to the Navajo Reservation to begin a five-month investigation involving violations of the intercourse acts. He started the investigation by consulting with C.E. Vandever, an Indian Agent at the Navajo Agency at Fort Defiance (also pictured in the photograph). See Miller, Darlis A. Accompanied by a cabinet card taken by Charles Eisenmann, NY, signed "Yours truly, Captain Jack Crawford, Late Chief of Scouts." Condition: Group portrait with loss to top left and bottom right corners of mount. Inked notes on front correspond with identifications on back. Slight surface wear to print, especially along side showing Captain Jack. Some soiling to Eisenmann card, image has undergone toning. Signature a bit light, but still legible.
