Turner, an army officer in the East India Company, led Warren Hasting's mission to the countries in 1783 and 1784 with the aim of enlisting the Panchen Lama's help in arranging a British mission to Peking. His "account of carefully observed conditions in Tibet and Bhutan, their forms of government, religious customs, trade, and topography, has stood the test of time and remained a source of great value" (ODNB). The plates include an image of the Bhutanese yak that Turner succeeded shipping alive to Hastings in England, where it was painted by George Stubbs
