CANNING, EFFIE I. [pseudonym of EFFIE I. CROCKETT] (1847-1940). Autograph manuscript signed ("Effie I. Canning"), of her verses "Rock-a-Bye Baby," comprising three stanzas and chorus ("Rock-a-bye baby, on the tree top"). N.p., n.d. [composed about 1872; this fair copy 1920 or later]. 1 page, 4to, in ink on bond paper. "ROCK-A-BYE BABY" A fair copy of the famous modern version of this old English lullaby. The original words are believed to have been first published about 1765 in John Newbery's Mother Goose's Melody , and were reprinted at a later date in America by Isaiah Thomas. In about 1872, fifteen-year-old Effie I. Crockett, while babysitting, composed the well-known tune and reworked the old words of the song, changing the first line. Published as a song with piano accompaniment under the pseudonym Effie I. Canning in 1884 by a Boston music publisher, it rapidly became one of the best-known of all children's songs. For details see James J. Fuld, The Book of World Famous Music , pp.468-169. Rare.
