CANDOLLE, Augustin Pyramus de & REDOUTÉ, Pierre Joseph. [ Plantarum Succulentarum. Histoire des Plantes Grasses ], Paris, chez Garnery & A.A. Renouard, [1799-1804] 2 volumes, 2° (540 x 340 mm.), 144 stipple-engraved plates, printed in colour and finished by hand after drawings by P.J. Redouté, except plates 55 & 60 which are after H.J. Redouté (one plate with tear repaired), 3pp. list of the 122 plates contained in the first 20 parts, bound in vol. I. Old boards with original printed wrappers dated 'An X' pasted on covers (rebacked and recornered with maroon morocco, spines gilt) ORIGINAL LARGE PAPER ISSUE OF WHICH ONLY 100 COPIES WERE PUBLISHED. Completely uncut and bound from the original (24?) Livraisons , without titles, preliminary leaves, indexes, etc., but with two original pink printed paper wrappers bound in as titles. "A most important work, and from the print point of view of technique and of pure colour printing, Redouté's masterpiece" (Dunthorne). The work was issued in 28 parts and a further 3 parts appeared between 1829 and 1837. Complete sets, containing over 180 plates, are very rare, and few copies are identical.
