CANAL, Antonio (1697-1768, called 'Il Canaletto'). Vedute altre prese da i luoghi altre ideate da Antonio Canal e da esso intagliate poste in prospetiva. [Venice: after 6 June 1744]. Oblong folio (458 x 628mm). Etched title and 30 plates by and after Canaletto (Bromberg nos. 1-11, 13-16, 18-33) on 18 sheets. Uncut in original grey wrappers (frayed and with small repairs). Contained within modern morocco-backed marbled box. Provenance : Mr. Jenner (contemporary ownership signature on verso of front wrapper). Using Bromberg's numbering, the set comprises: 1. Title. 2nd state (of 2). Watermark: triple crescent. (Light surface soiling to margins, foremargin frayed.) 2. La Torre di Malghera . 2nd state (of 3). Watermark: triple crescent with A.S. countermark. 3. Mestre. 1st state (of 2). Early impression. Watermark: triple crescent and A.[S.] countermark. 4. Al Dolo. 2nd state (of 3). Two etchings on one sheet. Watermark: [?]crescent and A.S. countermark. (Repair at lower right hand corner.) FINE STRONG IMPRESSIONS, THE SHEETS WITH DECKLE EDGES AND IN CONTEMPORARY WRAPPERS. Although other series of etchings were produced after Canaletto, this is the artist's sole etched work. The only plates not included are 12, the Imaginary View of Venice on an undivided plate, of which only six known impressions exist; 17, Fragment of a Bishop's Tomb, of which the only known example is at Windsor; 34, Landscape with a Church, Houses and Two Pillars, known only in two impressions; and 35 Alpine Landscape, of which the one impression is again at Windsor. The actual order of the etchings as bound is: 1; 7; 10; 11; 9; 8; 5; 6; 4; 3; 2; 15, 32-33; 30-31; 22-25; 18-21; 26-29; 13-14. Canale
