Paris: Nyon aîné, 1776. 2 volumes in one, 8° (200 x 120mm). 10 engraved plates before letters, unsigned, attributed to Eisen. Half-titles. (Some waterstaining at lower margins, occasionally heavy.) Contemporary French red morocco attributed to Bradel, covers with gilt dentelle border, flat spine with gilt bands and repeated oval ornament, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, blue silk markers, gilt edges. Provenance : Alexis de Redé (bookplate) -- Edouard Rahir (booklabel, sold Francisque Lefrançois/Drouot 7 May 1935, lot 734) -- [B. Quaritch (collation note at rear)]. 'Rare en ancienne reliure en maroquin' (Rahir catalogue). A bookseller's pencil note attributes the elegant morocco binding to Bradel. This translation of Os Lusiadas by Vaquette d'Hermilly and J.-F. Laharpe followed the 3-volume 12° translation of Duperron de Castéra which had appeared in 1735 and 1768 with 10 plates by Bonnart. Eisen likewise contributed a plate to each canto. The plate above, from canto six, shows Venus appeasing the tempest. Brunet I, 1518; Cohen/de Ricci 200; Quérard 30.
