CAMDEN, William (1551-1623). Camden's Britannia. Newly Translated into English: with large Additions and Improvements. London: F. Collins, 1695. 2 o (450 x 280 mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece by R. White, 50 engraved double-page or folding maps, 9 plates of coins and antiquities. Contemporary English panelled calf gilt, gilt-lettered spine label (rebacked preserving original spine, corners repaired some wear particularly to mottled panels). A tall copy of the first edition to contain the Morden maps. "The first edition of Camden's Britannia came out in 1586... If Camden was not the first English historian (in the modern sense of the word), topographer and antiquarian, he was certainly the first to relate the three studies, and his Britannia , primarily topographical, is the first book which shows... the need to evaluate sources." See PMM 101; Chubb CXII; Skelton 117; Wing C-359.
