CALVIN, Jean (1509-1564). Autograph document signed, a deposition to the authorities of Geneva on the circumstances of the attempted suicide of Jean Vachat, n.p. [Geneva], 23 January 1545, in French, one page, folio (320 x 215mm) , (slight browning in centre folds and at margins, traces of former mounting in corners, small paper loss from tears in right hand corners). Provenance : Collection of John-Gabriel Eynard (1775-1863). CALVIN AND THE SUICIDE: an apparently unpublished account of a tragic event the previous evening, when Calvin was summoned by Pierre Vachat to his brother [Jean Vachat] who had attempted to end his suffering by stabbing himself: 'Assavoir q[ue] son frere ayant dema[n]de un cousteau de la servante se lestoit fonce au ventre: me priyant q[ue] j'y allasse sur ce j'y allay: et trouvasmes en schemin nostre compaignon M. Matthieu de Genestons. Il me dict q[ue] ouy. Et ce il me la reitera par deux fois ... '. Jean Vachat was persuaded to confess and to ask God's pardon, and to endure the attentions of 'Maistre Claude le barbier', summoned to dress his wounds, and Calvin attests that before he and Genestons left him Vachat was in his right mind ('En toutes ses contena[n]ces et paroles je ne peu apercevoir sinon quil estoit de sens rassis'). A statement by Calvin's companion Matthieu de Geneston (a fellow minister) in the Archives d'Etat of Geneva (Procès XVIè siècle) records that Jean Vachat was suffering terribly and wished by stabbing himself to end his agony. The document is of great interest in showing an unusually compassionate side to Calvin who avoids condemning Vachat and offers the possiblity of repentance and divine forgiveness. But two hours after Calvin's visit Vachat died and, following the criminal enquiry which inevitably followed attempts at suicide, the Lieutenant of Justice for Geneva ordered that his body should be interred by the hangman in the place reserved for convicted criminals below the gallows. The document is not in the Opera (1873-1874, vols.11-12)
