AN IMPORTANT COLONIAL HISTORY, containing a good deal of information concerning Roger Williams religious freedom, Indians and Indian wars, etc., by the pastor of the Baptist church in Newport, Rhode Island, the second Baptist church in the United States. A rather learned work, drawing upon much original research, as well as critical readings and assessments of the histories of William Hubbard and Cotton Mather. [ Mounted on flyleaf: ] WATTS, Isaac. Autograph letter signed, Newington, 21 May 1739, to Rev. Stennett of London, presenting the volume to him: "I send to you here from Dr. [Benjamin] Colman of New England, a history which best exemplifies the blessed effects of an universal tolerations of religions, which are not inconsistent with the welfare of ye state; tis ye best, I say, that ever I read or heard of; & if the rulers of this world wou'd enter into the spirit & practise of it I'm persuaded the fruits of it wd every where appear to ye honor of God & ye happiness of men." The recipient was likely Joseph Stennett (1692-1758), a Baptist minister at Little Wild Street, Lincoln's Inn Fields, in London, who published a number of sermons. Isaac Watts had an abiding interest in religious toleration, and actively sought to unite the Baptists with other independent sects. Benjamin Colman was one of Boston's most prominent clergymen; he and Watts were frequent correspondents. Evans 4347; Howes C-74 ("aa"); Sabin 10075; Streeter II:677.
