[CALIFORNIA PHOTOGRAPHY] KNEELAND, SAMUEL. The Wonders of Yosemite Valley and California . Boston: Alexander Moore, 1872. Second edition. Original green publisher's cloth decorated in gilt and blind. 10 3/8 x 6 3/4 inches (26.5 x 17 cm); xii, 79 pp, with two maps and ten mounted original albumen prints attributed to John P. Soule, retaining the tissue guards. Some light wear to the covers and tips of the spine, but a sound copy, internally with a little nominal foxing to the text, but quite fresh . A significant early guide book to the Yosemite Valley by a professor of zoology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Though John Soule is credited with the photographs on the title, it is believed that he purchased the negatives, with Martin Mason Hazeltine now considered the most likely source. Page 74 in the second edition contains the first use of a quotation by Muir in book form. Cowan p.333; Currey & Kruska 225. C
