early silver gelatin photograph showing (15) uniformed team members and two men in civilian dress at center, imprint of Remington, Buffalo, N.Y. The side margin of the card is imprinted From Murray's Cigar Store, 345 Main Street, headquarters for B.B. Returns. The Buffalo Bisons were a member of the short-lived Players League that existed only in 1890. Published records indicate the team was managed by Jack Rowe with Sam Wise at second base. Rowe-Ma'Gr and Wise-2nd B. are pictured and identified on this card; however, none of the other players match the roster of the 1890 team. The league was in deep financial difficulty and ceased operation after one year. This could possibly be a photograph for a team assembled for an 1891 season that never took the field. Historical documentation for the Players League is incomplete at best. Provenance: Ex James E. Sanders Collection Condition: VG+.
