BYRON, George Gordon Noel, Lord (1788-1824). English Bards and Scotch Reviewers . London: T. Collins for James Cawthorn, [1809]. 12 o (187 x 110 mm). Half-title, prefatory leaf. Wove paper, watermarked "E & P 1805." ("1st Edition" inscribed in ink in an early hand on title, few minor spots.) Original printed drab boards, uncut (skilfully rebacked, a few faint ink scribblings on front cover); quarter calf slipcase. Provenance : Britwell Court Library (pencil inscription on front pastedown) purchased at the sale through Seven Gables Bookshop, Sotheby's London, 29 March 1971, lot 66. Exhibited : Grolier Club, 'This powerfull rime,' 1975, no. 52. FIRST EDITION, second issue, with line 47 reading "Dispatch" and "wizard's," the fourth line of the Preface reading "Author," and line 159 reading "crouds." Randolph writes of Wise's appraisal of the issues: "Wise's contention that the copies without the prefactory [ sic ] leaf constitute an issue is incorrect--the two variants differ in the printing of 'dispatch,' and as noted above, a volume lacking the prefactory [ sic ] leaf is only incomplete." Hayward agrees: "The evidence [Wise] adduces is implausible, and is presumably advanced in order to cover up the absence of the 'Preface' from the Ashley copy in original boards." The misprint on page 5 is the distinguishing point between the two issues, but due to the complicated printing history of the book, questions regarding priority remain inconclusive. Hayward 219; Randolph, p.15; Wise Byron I, pp.20-21.
