London: Brumby & Clarke Ltd. for L. Reeve & Co., 1894[-1896]. 1 volume bound from ten original parts, large 4to (316 x 265 mm). Title in red and black, small format correction slip bound in following p.[44]. 60 fine hand-colored lithographed plates, heightened with gum Arabic, after F.W. Frohawk by Brumby & Clarke. Recent blue half morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, spine gilt, marbled endpapers, original upper wrappers to the ten original parts bound in at back, t.e.g. Condition : without half-title, small tape repair to ‘Gouldian Finch’ plate, small tape repairs to lower blank margins of 2B1-4, 2A1 and 2B1 chipped with loss to lower outer corner, very small chips to lower outer corners of leaves from 2S1 to the end. Provenance : Lynn Abbott Trust. a fine copy of the first edition, bound from the original parts . "This magnificent work depicts over 80 non-British finches and other cage-birds, discussing their songs, food, and care in captivity" (Wood). As Butler admits in the preface, he included many birds that were not strictly finches: tanagers, buntings, grosbeaks (including the cardinal), waxbills, whydahs and weaver birds.
