Original red cloth gilt, upper covers ruled and decorated in black, lower covers in blind, (spines faded). FIRST EDITION IN AN UNRECORDED VARIANT BINDING in fine condition. Of this sole edition only 1000 copies were printed but this variant binding is not noted by either Penzer or Kirkpatrick. Bound without the ads, it may have been earmarked by the publishers for the author's personal use. A biographer wrote that 'where 'The Gold Mines of Midian' reflected cheerful expectation, 'The Land of Midian' radiated disenchantment.' Yet, his mapping and archaeological work are not to be under-rated. Richard Francis BURTON. Itineraries of the Second Khedivial Expedition: Memoir Explaining the New Map of Midian made by the Egyptian Staff-Officers . London: William Clowes for the Royal Geographical Society, 1880. 8° (213 x 140mm). Folding map. Original printed green wrappers, title printed on upper cover. A rare first edition offprint of his lecture before the R.G.S. in 1879. (3)
