Inscribed 'From the author' on title-page and with his Arabic signature. THE VERY RARE FIRST SEPARATE PRINTING AND AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY OF BURTON'S IMPORTANT WORK ON THE LAKE REGIONS. Burton signed this issue of 'The Lake Regions' which, as an offprint with a separate title-page and wrapper title, was likely given him by the printers for his own use. Clowes were printers to John Murray who, in turn, published the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society in which the work first appeared in 1859. The text is identical to that in the Journal of the R.G.S. but without the Index. It is considered Burton's best writing and is also his first attack in print on Speke, his chosen companion to Central Africa. Speke was the first to return to England and the first to publish, in Blackwood's Magazine, and took credit for their 'discovery' of Lake Nyanza and the source of the White Nile. Burton countered with his denouncement of Speke's 'inaccurate data and outrageous speculations' and the R.G.S. printed it in full, perhaps in retaliation for Speke having turned to Blackwood's Magazine for publication and not to its own august self the sponsors of the expedition.
