BURTON, Richard Francis The Highlands of the Brazil......... Explorations of the Highlands of the Brazil; with a full account of the gold and diamond mines. . London: Tinsley Brothers, 1869. 2 volumes, 8° (229 x 150mm). Folding map in Volume I, 2 engraved plates, with advertisements in Volume II. Original green cloth gilt, covers triple-ruled in blind, gilt-illustrated covers. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE IN VERY FINE CONDITION. As HBM Consul in Santos, Burton had progressed one rung up the diplomatic ladder but the climate took its toll. In Brazil's 'chronic state of death' he abandoned hopes of scaling Aconcagua but looked after his mining concessions, crossed the Andes, coasted Chile, and with Isabel he navigated the almost unknown San Francisco River by raft and canoe. It was she who returned to London and saw the book through the publishers, adding her own Preface to 'protest vehemently' against her husband's 'religious and moral sentiments.' This 'revealing passage has been overlooked by Burton's biographers' according to Casada. Penzer p. 78-80. Casada 33. Spink 39. (2)
