FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE (?), This copy a binding variant in a School Prize Binding. As Penzer notes, a variety of bindings was used on what were 'prize' issues of this work. The cloth of this copy conforms with Penzer's first issue but not its size. He does not note, however, whether the prize bindings were printed and bound up with the first or with the second issue of the work. As Appendix IV was withdrawn from the first issue, its absence in this copy does not signify it is a late issue. On first reading, Burton's adventure is certainly the stuff of legend favoured for school prizes: the lone, bold traveller in disguise on an officially unofficial mission into dangerous territory penetrates a legendary city, but on the return journey he and his men are massively outnumbered in an attack by fanatical tribesmen. They overcome the odds but Burton is left with a javelin lodged in his cheek and his jaw immobilized, yet he makes a noble retreat to safety. Penzer p. 60-63. Casada 35. Spink 16.
