Type: 2:115G. 2- to 6-line initials in red or blue, red paragraph marks, capital strokes, and foliation. (Very light marginal dampstaining in first quire, a few small wormholes in final two quires.) Contemporary South-German red-stained deerskin over bevelled wooden boards, sides tooled to a saltire design with rosettes at intersections and outer border of repeated 'maria' (upper cover) or fleur-de-lis (lower cover) tools (not in Kyriss or Schwenke-Sammlung ), single brass fore-edge catchplate retained on upper cover, later paper spine label (worn, front pastedown renewed). Provenance : 17th-century bibliographical note written on 2/2r -- stamp removed from first page. THIRD BOOK PRINTED BY KOBERGER, AND THE FIRST EDITION OF THE SHORTER SOUTH-GERMAN RECENSION which omits 13 lives. Burley's work gives a brief biographical notice of poets and philosophers throughout the ages, including Archimedes, Homer, Hermes, Plotinus, Virgil, and Zoroaster. It belongs to a group of five of the earliest books printed by Anton Koberger among which priority has recently been established on the basis of paper evidence (cf. J.I.
