BURHN, Muhammad Husain ibn Khalaf. Boorhani Qatiu, a dictionary of the Persian language, explained in Persian. Edited by Thomas Roebuck Calcutta: Philip Pereira at the Hindoostanee Press, 1818. 2 (310 x 234mm). Printed in Arabic throughout with the exception of: English title, dedication to the Marquis of Hastings, 6pp. preface, 9pp. other preliminary matter, 4pp. subscriber's list. all printed in English with occasional Persian. (Light spotting to first and last few leaves.) Modern cloth. A RARE WORK. Orientalist and officer with the East India Company, Thomas Roebuck (1781-1819) was responsible for the publication of a number translations and original works between 1811 ( An English and Hindustani Naval Dictionary , Calcutta) and 1819 ( The Annals of the College of Fort William , Calcutta), when he died from 'fever'. His Collection of Proverbs abd Colloquial Phrases in the Persian and Hindstani Languages was published posthumously, in Calcutta in 1824.
