Engraved title by van Merlen after Diepenbeeck and 50 oval emblematic illustrations in the text by A. Pauli after Dieppenbeck. (Light discolouration and spotting). Contemporary vellum, title-label on spine. Provenance : Brussels, Jesuit College (inscription at head of title dated 1639, the year of the book's publication, presented to them by the Flemish Jesuit scholar, François L'Hermite). FIRST EDITION of this charming emblem book contrasting the vanities and the truths of this world and valuable for its depiction of interior scenes, landscapes and streets and buildings of Flemish towns.
