A fine document, linking four important Elizabethan statesman. Burghley, as well as other members of the Privy Council, offered commendations to the Bishop of York, who managed to convert Richard Stapleton and his wife to the Anglican church. William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley, was Elizabeth's chief minister. Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, began an affair with the Queen in 1587. Essex was the stepson of Elizabeth’s long-time lover Robert Dudley In 1589, he took part in Francis Drake's English Armada, in 1596, he distinguished himself by the capture of Cadiz. During the Islands Voyage expedition to the Azores in 1597, with Walter Raleigh as his second in command, he defied the Queen's orders, pursuing the treasure fleet without first defeating the Spanish battle fleet. Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury, was the son of the Queen's principal minister and a protégé of Sir Francis Walsingham, Elizabeth's principal spymaster.
