Beschreibung:

Lot of 4 photographs, including: a silver gelatin photograph of Bar Room, Irma Hotel, Cody Trail to Yellowstone Park, showing Cody and a few other men enjoying drinks and cigars at the bar, mounted to 8.5 x 10.5 in., with inked title in the margin of the print; a photograph of Buffalo Bill shaking hands with the driver of a car on the streets of his eponymous town, with credit to photographer F.J. Hiscock at l.r. and penciled title on verso A steam automobile (a Stanley to be precise), 7.75 x 9.5 in., unmounted; a similar photograph taken from the same vantage point and showing the same car, though with Cody wearing a different outfit; and a 5 x 7 in. unmounted photograph of a group of men (not including Cody) on the porch of the Pahaska Teepe / Buffalo Bill's Hunting-Lodge In The Rockies In The Heart Off Big Game Country. The photograph credited to Hiscock is identified elsewhere as being taken by Jack Richard outside the Irma Hotel in October 1913. The man Cody is shaking hands with is Charles G. "Spend-A-Million" Gates, an extravagant Wall Street trader who traveled to Cody for five weeks of big game hunting with his entourage. Mr. Gates arrived just after the departure of Prince Albert I of Monaco, who had hired Buffalo Bill as his personal hunting guide, yet made the townspeople forget about their royal guest by showering the town with wealth via gift purchases, church and civic donations, and exorbitant tips to all who helped serve him. The photo offered here was taken as the group was preparing to return to New York, however Gates fell seriously ill and died in his private rail car at the Cody depot just hours later. Provenance: Descended in the Family of a Member of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Cowboy Band Condition: First with a few scattered yellow stains, else very good. Second with creasing in upper left corner. Third with creasing at lower left and lower right, and yellow stains and warping in the left third. Last with staining and warping throughout.
