A PARCEL-GILT BRONZE 'ELEPHANT' TRIPOD CENSER AND RETICULATED COVER
17th/18th century
Heavily cast, the deep body cast in the form of an inverted bell supported on three elephant-head feet, each with curved tusks and bejewelled harnesses, decorated in relief around the body with lotus scrolls, set with a pair of gilt-bronze handles in the form of caparisoned elephant heads with their trunks raised, the cover cast in openwork with lotus scrolls circling the finial cast as a recumbent resting elephant, embellished with inlaid beaded jewels and draped with an embroidered saddle cloth, carrying a gilt treasure vase on its back, with glass, turquoise and hardstone inlays.
