London: printed for Hen. Brome, 1658. Small 8vo (156 x 104 mm). 2pp. “The Stationer to the Reader” and 1p. of publisher’s advertisements at the end. 3 engraved illustrations, 2 full-page, one of these bound as a frontispiece. Later calf gilt, neatly rebacked, marbled endpapers. Condition : lacks O8 the “perpendicular half-title”, without the pasted on errata slip on O6 (as often), small neat repair to upper blank margin of the title, inner margins of title and two following leaves extended; rebacked. Provenance : RH (early initails on title); ?Sir Henry Peek (Rousdon, Devon book label); Patience Burne (book label). first edition of a work which demonstrates “browne’s luxuriant style , and next to his Religio Medici , are more widely known and read than perhaps any other of his work” (Pforzheimer).
