Original printed wrappers, glassine dustwrapper, gold paper covered chemise (spine ends slightly chipped and with short tears, dustwrapper lightly browned, chemise a little worn). Provenance : Stephen Van Rensselaer Crosby (b.1868, presentation inscription on front free endpaper 'SVRC , from , Harry', the signature embellished with a 'Black Sun' motif)--Caresse Crosby ('Black Sun' blindstamp on front free endpaper; gilt morocco 'Crosby Cross' bookplate on inside of upper wrapper)--James Cummins, Bookseller, New York (loosely-inserted bookseller's invoice). FIRST EDITION, ONE OF 150 COPIES, INSCRIBED BY HARRY CROSBY TO HIS FATHER, and later in Caresse Crosby's collection. Minkoff A25; Published in Paris p.408. B. BROWN. 1450-1950 . Provenance : Harold ['Hal'] Witter Bynner (1881-1968, his name on the 'Free Copies' list circled and linked by the word 'FROM' to Brown's on the title; Brown's loosely-inserted card inscribed 'My dear W. Bynner: "Hush, there's a poet in the house", or something like that which I always remember. Sincerely Bob Brown'; Bynner's bookplate on inside upper wrapper). FIRST EDITION, ONE OF 150 COPIES, PRESENTATION COPY FROM BROWN TO WITTER BYNNER, with loosely-inserted autograph card signed from Brown. Minkoff A25; Published in Paris p.408. FIRST EDITIONS, THE FIRST INSCRIBED TO HIS FATHER BY CROSBY, THE SECOND INSCRIBED TO THE POET BYNNER BY BROWN. 1450-1950 was 'an amusing mixture of ideography and calligraphy, examples of which Brown had been amassing--with obvious pleasure--for many years' ( Published in Paris p.200), and was dedicated to 'All monks who illuminated manuscripts--all early oriental artists--Omar--Gutenberg--Caxton--Jimmy-the-Ink--Boccaccio--Rabelais--S hakespeare--Defoe--Goya--Blake--Sterne--Whitman--Crane--Stein--Joyce--P agliacci--and myself' (p.[x]). The volume was printed in an edition of 150 copies, subsidised by Brown, and copies went to the 58 artists, writers and publishers listed on the 'Free Copies' page, who included--in addition to Bynner--John Dos Passos, Djuna Barnes, Marcel Duchamp Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway, William Carlos Williams, e.e. cummings, Man Ray, and James Joyce.
